Honoring Our Heritage

Joseph Johnson
1795. Joseph Johnson, a proud son of Liverpool in England, was undoubtedly an outstanding maker and pioneer of chronometry, who enjoyed the highest reputation in the United Kingdom. His life's journey led him into the arms of Mary Bryers, and together they wrote a history of watchmaking in Liverpool from 1795 until approximately 1827. His workshop, a place of craftsmanship and precision, was located at the venerable Church Street No. 25, while his home in the same street was hidden elsewhere.

Dynasty
A notable feature of his timepieces was the proud engraving of the address 25 Church Street, a tribute to the roots of his masterpieces. But even after Joseph Johnson's departure from this world on March 2, 1827, his legacy lived on. His beloved wife Mary, his talented son Joseph Johnson, as well as his gifted grandsons, Joseph Johnson Cashen and Joseph Johnson Norris, kept the torch of his craft burning, tirelessly continuing his work until at least 1857. They deserve recognition for admirably carrying forward his legacy.

Masterpieces
The timepieces of Joseph Johnson always shone with the highest quality and were often encased in precious metal cases, mostly made of gold. Unfortunately, many of these masterpieces have been lost over time, which is why today numerous watches from the House of Johnson exist only as bare movements.

Legend
It's worth mentioning that Joseph Johnson's watches were often used on the American railroads even before the U.S. watchmaking industry was established. In 1816, the U.S. government even decided to select a chronometer signed by Johnson with the number 508 to honor Commodore Oliver H. Perry. This was done in recognition of his services during the conflict against the British on Lake Erie. This gesture demonstrates the extraordinary appreciation that Joseph Johnson and his masterpieces enjoyed.

Immortal
Its delicate craftsmanship, its fine mechanical finesse, and its innovative aesthetics laid the foundation for the success of his watches. Particularly beautiful masterpieces can still be admired today in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the British Museum, and the Liverpool Museum.

Renaissance
In 2005, Joseph Johnson was gradually revived by his descendants and Klaus Moschner. Even today, the brand remains privately owned. The story of Joseph Johnson, our namesake and spiritual mentor, inspires us to continue his delicate craftsmanship and fine mechanical finesse in our watch collections. We are proud to keep his inventions and legacy alive in our chronographs: Manhattan, Downtown, Intuition, Executive, and Cosmotimer.
